AMERICAN GYPSY: a stranger in everybody's land
Director Jasmine Dellal
Video 79 minutes 40 seconds 1999

There are one million Gypsies, or Rom, in America, who most people know nothing about. Never before has a camera been allowed in to explore their world. Shot over the course of five years, AMERICAN GYPSY: a stranger in everybody's land is a feature length documentary exploring the secretive Romani culture and the history it came from. The combination of "Gypsy" and "American" cultures transports us to scenes that range from New Years in Las Vegas, to the arranged marriage of teenagers; and from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum to car salesmen in Stetson hats driving Cadillac's.

THE FORGERY
Director Erika Yeomans
16mm Film , 22 minutes 1999

THE FORGERY is a witty montage of stolen text and recreated images from over 40 popular books and films written and produced during 1948 to 1952. Inspired by late 1940's pulp fiction where murder and circumstantial evidence lay in wait for the unsuspecting double-crossing double-crosser. By weaving together these popular bestsellers and films of the period, everything from musical comedies to B noir thrillers, the video creates a demi-forgery of America's pop ideologies. THE FORGERY re-invents stock film iconography like, the sweaty urban male, the flighty blonde, the busty brunette and the effeminate villain. First developed as a site specific performance project, the theater piece was then re-imagined as digital cinema piece.
